Applications of RO, UV, UF, TDS – Meaning and More!

RO, UV, UF, TDS – Meaning

What do you mean by safe drinking water? When we talk about safe water, we might only think about water free from microorganisms and minerals. When we plan to buy a water filter, we check whether it eliminates all the dissolved salts and microorganisms. Removing the dissolved salt also means the filter removes healthy minerals. So, we should check whether the water treatment system used in our place eliminates all the healthy minerals. There are many water filtration methods. This article discusses the RO, UV, UF, TDS meaning, applications and more!

What is TDS?

RO, UV, UF, TDS – Meaning

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) represent the concentration of organic and inorganic substances in water. The inorganic solids in water include cations and anions. The cations present in water are calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium. The anions include carbonates, nitrates, bicarbonates, chlorides and sulphates.

These minerals get dissolved in water naturally and also due to human activities. A high concentration of dissolved solids gives water an unpleasantly salty taste. It makes it undesirable to drink. For instance, if the TDS exceeds 500mg/L, the water might taste salty, metallic or bitter. A high concentration of TDS also shows that the water contains harmful substances such as iron, manganese, sulphate, arsenic and bromide. Dissolved solids can also produce hard water. Hard water eventually damages the pipes and fixtures. It also leaves a stain on the household utensils.

Water treatment facilities or purifiers use reverse osmosis to eliminate dissolved solids. The reverse osmosis process removes all harmful minerals, such as salt and lead. It also removes calcium and magnesium, which are healthy minerals. Good water purifiers or water treatment facilities filter this water again to add magnesium and calcium back to the water in the right quantity.

What is RO?

Reverse osmosis RO, UV, UF, TDS – Meaning

Filtration is the process of removing the dissolved solids from water by passing the water through a semipermeable membrane or a porous media. The size of the pores in the filter decides the size of the particles that can be removed. RO means Reverse Osmosis, and it is a filtration process. RO filters have a pore size of around 0.0001 micron.

So, RO removes all the dissolved salts from the water. It includes healthy minerals and unhealthy minerals. The water obtained after reverse osmosis would be pure water without any minerals. Minerals such as calcium and magnesium are needed for our body to maintain its health. So, good RO filters pass the pure water through a calcium and magnesium mineral bed to add minerals to the water.

Reverse Osmosis or RO also increases the water’s PH value, making it healthier for drinking. Another advantage of this filtration is that it decreases corrosion, saving water pipes and distribution systems.

What is UF?

For an Ultrafiltration (UF) filter, the semi-membrane used in the filter has a pore size of around 0.01 micron. So, all the microorganisms, including some viruses, are removed in ultrafiltration. But, sometimes, the organic matter present in the wastewater may block the membrane pores. It will damage the UF filter. So, the water should undergo a pre-treatment step, such as UV, before it passes through the UF filter. The pre-filter step will increase the life of UF filters.

What is UV?

The Ultraviolet (UV) water treatment method is a pre-treatment method. This treatment method uses ultraviolet rays that damage the cells of microorganisms and stops them from replicating. The water obtained through this method still needs to undergo another filtration step. The UV method does not remove the heavy metals and solids from the water. It also does not remove the microorganisms.

So, as you understand everything about RO filtration, we will discuss a filter that provides safe and healthy drinking water. QNET offers a MyHomePlus Knight Alkaline RO filter that provides safe and healthy drinking water.

MyHomePlus Knight Alkaline RO Water Filter

RO, UV, UF, TDS – Meaning, MyHomePlus Knight Alkaline RO Water Filter

The Knight Alkaline RO water filter is suitable for places that receive groundwater. RO water filter is needed if the TDS is above 500. It also adds healthy minerals such as calcium and magnesium to the pure water. It also features a built-in Kitchen and Dairy care filter that provides sterilised water. We can use sterilised water for cleaning baby stuff, vegetables, and utensils.

Knight Alkaline RO water filter undergoes a five-stage water filtration process. This process eliminates all the unhealthy minerals and provides us with pure water rich in healthy minerals. The five-stage filtration process removes all the odour, VCOs, bacteria and viruses. Also, since the RO filtration technology increases the PH value, we get mild alkaline water. Alkaline water has many health benefits.
